Challenge
Food waste sorting became mandatory in Brussels in May 2023. However, many citizens encounter difficulties and lack motivation in implementing this new habit. Brussels Environment tasked us with identifying and understanding regional barriers to food waste sorting before providing concrete solutions for how the region could help facilitate this behaviour.
Solution
Using our Landscape Model™, we conducted a comprehensive review of scientific literature and recent regional studies to identify contextual, social, and individual barriers to food waste sorting. Subsequently, we employed our Rainbow Wheel™ to identify relevant behavioural solutions, which were supported by a benchmark of best practices and co-designed during collaborative workshops.
Results
Brussels Environment received a comprehensive toolkit of 26 solutions to address communication campaigns, infrastructure deployment, and service changes. Each solution is accompanied by a step-by-step implementation plan, ensuring practical success.

"Behaven's approach, which is based on behavioural science, is particularly appealing for determining how to close the gap between intention and behaviour and optimise our initiatives. Behaven's approach reassembles all of the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle and provides concrete avenues for optimising our tools through rigorous, comprehensive analysis. Working with the Behaven team was an enjoyable experience. They're excellent listeners, adaptable, and agile."
