Case study
Clean Brussels
Waste
Brussels-Capital Region
Challenge
How do we go beyond raising awareness and providing information to encourage proper waste disposal? How can we apply behavioural science to create more effective public cleanliness interventions? How do we create better communications campaigns? Since 2020, we have been collaborating with the Brussels-Capital Region and its municipalities to address these questions.
Solution
Beginning with a comprehensive regional study, we identified contextual, social, and individual barriers to proper waste disposal in over ten specific contexts, including the high street, bus stops, and events. For each of these contexts, we collaborated with regional stakeholders and local municipalities to identify, cocreate, and prioritise behaviour change interventions for their infrastructure, communications, and service delivery.
Results
The region, its municipalities and other stakeholders can now access a catalogue of evidence-based interventions to encourage proper waste disposal in a variety of settings. This entire process resulted in increased intermunicipal collaboration, and formed part of the regional public cleanliness strategy.
